How Move-based Public Chains are Changing the Current Landscape of Public Chains

After hearing about the Aptos testnet in May, I began researching and writing the first batch of articles in Chinese about Aptos and Sui. These two public chains originate from the Facebook Libra project team and inherit the important legacy of the Move language. Their background evokes memories of the Fairchild Semiconductor Company, which changed the course of technology in the last century, and I hope they can recreate the Silicon Valley miracle.

Move is a computer language born for finance, specifically designed to handle the core token assets of blockchain. It defines digital assets as special and important Resource data, which must be stored under accounts to prevent accidental loss, thereby enhancing security. This addresses the shortcomings of Solidity in terms of intuitiveness and security.

Aptos and Sui, as high-performance public chains, are characterized by parallel processing and scalability:

  1. Parallel processing: A large number of simple transactions can be processed in parallel, while a small number of complex transactions are processed serially, improving the overall processing speed.

  2. Scalability: By increasing machine resources, the network throughput can be effectively improved, theoretically allowing for unlimited scalability.

These features provide robust network capacity support for the migration of Web2 applications to Web3, potentially triggering a Web3 revolution.

The Move-based public chain is likely to change the existing landscape of public chains. Previous new public chains mainly revolved around the concept of "Ethereum competitive chains," which had issues such as centralization, downtime, and congestion. The Move-based public chain has strong scalability and security, making it a potential competitor to Ethereum after its upgrade, capable of supporting grand narratives such as Web3, billions of users, and the metaverse.

Sui is more suitable for game development, as its modified Move is more object-oriented and has the intention to collaborate with Unity. Aptos, on the other hand, favors the NFT track and provides dedicated support for NFT applications in its SDK. However, the specific performance still needs time and practical testing.

The vision of Aptos and Sui is to improve blockchain security and scalability using the Move language, creating an infrastructure network for billions of people. They will not replace existing public chains but will serve new markets.

Ordinary users can participate in development by learning the Move language, or invest and experience in fields such as DeFi, GameFi, and NFTs. Currently, there are many wallets, infrastructure, and DeFi applications in the Aptos ecosystem, while the GameFi, SocialFi, and NFT sectors have many native applications, demonstrating the layout ambitions of Aptos and Sui.
