Jack Butcher: From Graphic Designer to Digital Art Pioneer

On July 26, 2023, the highly acclaimed NFT artist Jack Butcher gave his first interview in Asia. In this conversation, we gained an in-depth understanding of Jack's professional background, artistic creation philosophy, and his achievements in the field of digital art.

Jack Butcher's Artistic Journey

Jack Butcher was initially a graphic designer. In 2017, he founded his own company, engaging in various creative projects, including work related to design and applications. However, after he was exposed to digital art, he realized it could bring immense visual value, so he shifted his focus to creating digital art.

Jack expresses his thoughts on art through images. In 2021, he began to explore Ethereum. After establishing his first digital community, Jack realized that Ethereum could publicly showcase his work in the form of digital collectibles. Subsequently, his digital art was first presented to the public through an auction.

For the digital art market, Jack believes that NFT technology provides artists with a broader audience and revenue sources, and offers better protection for the ownership and authenticity of artworks. He believes that the digital art market will continue to grow and is expected to become an important part of the mainstream art field.

Jack's NFT Journey

When talking about his first experience with NFTs, Jack recalled that he learned about NFTs at the end of 2020 through a friend's introduction. Although he did not fully understand the concept of NFTs at first, he was attracted by the ability of NFTs to connect people through the internet. After experiencing the market boom in 2021, Jack believes that now is a good time to think about how to bring together communities, creators, and participants through new technologies.

When talking about his successful work Checks vv-edition, Jack emphasized the importance of clear narrative. He believes that in the current market, many people produce a large amount of content but are unclear about what they really want to express. Jack suggests that we should think more about the meaning of "small pictures" and apply it to our creations.

Regarding the Opepen project, Jack explained that it is an innovation based on the Checks vv-edition. Although both have achieved great success, there are certain differences in their core concepts. Checks vv-edition is more like an identity verification, while Opepen has made some differentiated designs based on this.

Jack also explained the origin of the number 80, which frequently appears in his work. The original Checks art creation consisted of 80 checks symbols created within an 8×10 grid. Based on this, the team developed a numerical system that includes numbers such as 1, 4, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80, which determines the quantity and rarity of the Checks.

Future Outlook

In terms of future plans, Jack expressed his interest in trying to create purely on-chain generated art NFTs, but he also recognizes that this requires consideration of factors such as infrastructure development, system maintenance, and management. He revealed that a new NFT project will soon be launched on Infinity Check.

For other creators, Jack suggests choosing some core elements during the creative process and sticking to them, without frequently changing unnecessary details. This can ensure the coherence of the work while improving the efficiency of creation.
