WhatsApp Rolls Out AI Message Summaries With Advanced Privacy

WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature called Message Summaries, which uses its in-house Meta AI system to generate summaries of unread messages. This update is available in English for users in the United States, with plans to expand to more languages and regions later in the year. The purpose is to help users quickly understand the content of unread chats before opening them.

The new feature operates with Private Processing, which WhatsApp introduced in April. Private Processing utilizes a “confidential virtual machine” (CVM) in the cloud. It establishes a secure session between the user’s device and the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) via Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP), a method designed to keep user data private while handling AI tasks.

WhatsApp says the technology ensures that neither Meta, WhatsApp, nor any outside entity can view message contents to create summaries. The platform emphasized, “No one else in the chat can see that you summarized unread messages either. This means your privacy is protected at all times.” Details on the feature are outlined in a recent WhatsApp blog post.

This launch comes at a time when the U.S. House of Representatives has added WhatsApp to a list of prohibited apps on government devices, citing security concerns.
