Trump signed an executive order to cut federal funding for NPR and PBS, with the two agencies vowing to mount a legal challenge.
According to Deep Tide TechFlow news, on May 5, reported by Cryptopolitan, former US President Donald Trump signed an executive order late at night on May 4, cutting public subsidies for National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) on the grounds of "reporting bias." NPR CEO Katherine Maher and PBS CEO Paula Kerger immediately announced plans to challenge the executive order in court, stating it is "clearly illegal."
The CEO of the Public Broadcasting Company, Patricia Harrison, stated that the White House has no legal jurisdiction over these companies. NPR called the order an affront to the First Amendment. Maher emphasized that funding cuts will have the greatest impact on local stations and their audiences, as NPR currently has 246 member organization newsrooms across the states. Notably, Trump has previously attempted to cut public broadcasting budgets multiple times and referred to NPR last year as a "liberal misinformation machine."
